Describe the symptom before choosing a repair

A no-start, an engine that stops, and an engine running without power at the house are different observations. Record the exact message and operating sequence safely. Those facts help a qualified professional plan the diagnosis; they do not establish a failed component by themselves.

Use the safe fault-observation guide before sending an inquiry. Do not open energized equipment, bypass a shutdown or adjust fuel components to collect information. If there is a hazardous condition, use the appropriate emergency route.

Generac’s outage fault guidance shows why controller and operating circumstances matter. Instructions for one system should not be applied indiscriminately to another.

If the engine runs but the house has no power

Tell the technician that the engine is running and explain which circuits lack power. The transfer equipment, circuit coverage and load-management behavior are part of the system. Do not assume that an unavailable managed load proves the engine has failed.

See transfer-system planning for the distinction between transfer, backup coverage and available generator capacity. Keep the original handoff records accessible if you have them.

Ask how diagnosis and repair are authorized

  • Which diagnostic work is included in a visit?
  • Will you receive the findings and proposed repair scope before extra work proceeds?
  • Are parts, labor, return visits and warranty work handled separately?
  • Which test will demonstrate the repaired system, and what might remain unresolved?

Confirm availability, service area and relevant qualifications directly. This site does not promise 24-hour dispatch, same-day restoration or a manufacturer-certified provider.

Keep the repair from becoming another missing record

Request a report naming the diagnosis, work performed and the operating test. Record any remaining issue and who will resolve it. Add the report to the maintenance log so future service starts with evidence.

If the generator cannot safely provide backup, use a separate household outage plan. Never improvise an outlet backfeed or operate portable combustion equipment indoors. The portable-generator guide explains the different operating responsibilities.
