A published starting range, with limits

Generac’s U.S. installation resource gives an average total range of $8,000–$16,000 including the generator. This manufacturer reference was checked October 8, 2026. It is not a Hoosier Generators price, a Central Indiana market survey or a quote for your property. Projects can fall outside the range.

Read the original cost and installation resource and request a property-specific scope. A product listing may exclude transfer equipment, site work or installation. Comparing that listing with an installed proposal produces a misleading price comparison.

Break the project into line items

Complete standby generator cost worksheet
Cost componentWhat the quote should define
GeneratorExact model, fuel rating and included accessories
Transfer equipmentExact arrangement, ratings and circuit coverage
Electrical workRoutes, labor and any service changes
Fuel workSupply assessment, piping and supplier coordination
Site preparationPad or approved base, access and restoration
ApprovalsApplications, inspections and responsibility for corrections
CommissioningTesting, documentation and owner demonstration
Ongoing ownershipService plan, consumables and fuel

Mark each item included, excluded or an allowance. A lower total with unspecified work is difficult to evaluate. Ask how unknown conditions will be priced and who authorizes additional work.

Three property questions that change the scope

  • Where can the exact model be placed while meeting its instructions and applicable requirements?
  • Can the existing fuel supply support the proposed generator alongside other demand?
  • Which circuits must run together, and which can be managed?

Answer those questions before relying on a catalog size or online total. The placement sketch, fuel comparison and load worksheet help prepare the discussion.

Compare assumptions before comparing totals

Suppose one proposal includes a managed whole-panel arrangement and another includes selected circuits. The generator model alone does not make them equivalent. Ask both providers to describe coverage and exclusions using the same household priorities.

The same applies to fuel and site work. Identify who provides any tank, who coordinates utility review, what route is assumed and what restoration is included. Use the proposal comparison guide to create one consistent checklist.

Keep ownership costs separate

Installation is one expense. Maintenance, consumables, fuel and any monitoring arrangement belong in the ownership plan. Ask for model-specific service tasks, pricing and exclusions rather than assuming a warranty pays for routine care.

If you are comparing payment plans, request the actual APR, fees, repayment schedule and total amount paid. The financing questions page explains what to collect. This site does not offer a lender, rate or approval guarantee.

What makes a useful cost inquiry

Share the city, the loads you want backed up, available fuel information and whether this is a new system or replacement. A written proposal should then identify the provider, equipment, responsibilities and work included. Confirm qualifications and availability before contracting.

Avoid paying for an unassessed equipment choice simply to hold a headline price. Ask what assessment remains, what could change the proposed scope and how the final operating demonstration will show the coverage you are buying.
